Dental demographics point to the inescapable conclusion that during the next 20 years there will be a huge surge in advanced adult dental restorative needs and a declining number of dentists with adequate training to meet the needs. The general dentist will be at the forefront of this crisis. It is imperative that he/she be adequately prepared for the busiest time of his/her professional life.
The general dentist is first and foremost a restorative dentist. One needs to continually ask, "Am I providing the best dental care for my patients?" Reap great rewards for you and your patients by developing you niche now and sticking to it.
Develop strong restorative skills and knowledge. This is a lifetime pursuit with ever-evolving technology and materials. Become a lifetime student of advanced restorative procedures. Attend on-going CE programs or a prosthodontic specialty program. It is never too late. The great advantage of specialty training is developing the critical thinking and putting it all together on comprehensive cases. Mouths breakdown for two primary reasons - biological or mechanical. Control the biological breakdown and master the mechanics of the stomatognathic system. Dental implants are now an integral part of restorative dentistry. Learn the benefits of 3-D radiographic information, digital photography and proper laboratory support. Our approach to a single anterior implant case is basically the same as to a full mouth implant case. With implant dentistry, there is just more initial planning.
Present and accomplish procedures within your training and comfort level. Don't get lured into biting off more than you can chew, sometimes it bites back. Work with trained specialists on more complex, comprehensive cases. There are plenty of the routine, highly predictable procedures to keep you busy and prosperous. Too often, the restorative doctor makes inappropriate surgical calls and the surgeon makes inappropriate restorative calls.
Implant dentistry is changing our basic approach to oral rehabilitation. Think in different terms when it comes to prognosis, site preparation, esthetics, occlusal forces, materials, prosthetic longevity and patient satisfaction. With proper planning and execution, dental implants are enjoying a remarkable, superior final result as compared to dealing with failing teeth. Learn where-to, how-to, when to and when-not-to.
